The Crawford Experience
The Crawford Aviation Community is set in one of the more unknown but spectacular areas of the west. The town is a genuine western cow town, set at an elevation of 6600 feet with a mild climate and moderate winters. Many daily needs can be met locally with restaurants, general convenience store, bank, post office, gift shops, churches, library and motel. There are several artists in the area, including two with an internationally recognized glass foundry and art studio.
A major feature for aviators is that while Crawford is in a remote setting it is centrally located in an area rich with business centers, literally turning hours of driving into minutes of flying. Air time examples in an ordinary small GA airplane would be Aspen, Gunnison, Grand Junction, Rifle, Nucla, all around 25 minutes; Montrose or Delta, I0 minutes; and Salt Lake City. Denver, Cheyenne. Ft. Collins. Colorado Springs or Farmington, all around or under 1.5 hours. Locally owned courtesy cars are available in many of those areas for the convenience of local airpark pilots.
Natural wonders are nearly too numerous to list. Within sight of the airpark is Grand Mesa, a 300-lake all-season wonderland with skiing, snowmobiling, camping, lodges, fishing and more. Also within sight is the rim of the Black Canyon National Park, West Elk Wilderness Area, Ragged Mountain, and Black Mesa, all within a few minutes drive. Each of these is a wonder world of outdoor experiences. The Black Canyon is a one-of-a-kind fissure, half a mile deep and only 1300 feet rim to rim. It offers world class kayaking and hiking. Crawford State Park is only a five-minute drive away from the airpark and offers great fishing, camping, water skiing, picnic areas and a sand swimming beach.
Another unique local attraction is Needle Rock, an old volcano core standing 400 feet above the valley floor. Rock star Joe Cocker and his wife Pam chose the meadows next to Needle Rock and the Crawford community for their beautiful ranch and permanent home.
Delta County has a good school system with nationally recognized specialties such as the science centers built on to all schools and the innovative VISION program, each the first in the nation and copied in other areas. Medical facilities include a local medical clinic just I0 minutes away and the new Delta Hospital 30 miles away. Within an hour are comprehensive medical facilities at both Montrose and Grand Junction, with top-level care in all medical disciplines.
The most attractive characteristic of the Crawford Aviation Community is that it has the best of all worlds; somewhat like living in the woods at the edge of a city. No other airpark comes to mind that has such an apparent remote setting but is actually on the doorstep of a complete mix of natural, cultural business, and aviation offerings.
